Fiorenzato Ducale — PSSR examination & servicing

Ducale machines are used in cafés, restaurants and hotels running two or three groups on a single steam boiler nationwide. The engineer carries out the statutory PSSR examination, the front-end service and the water treatment on this model — a standalone examination is £295 + VAT, or £500 + VAT with the service included.

2 and 3 group Single boiler Written Scheme of Examination

Quick answer

Does a Fiorenzato Ducale need a PSSR examination?

Yes, if it operates in a workplace. It carries a single steam boiler with its own protective devices, which is the pressure system in scope. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000 and steam systems are covered at any pressure and any volume, so the boiler must have a Written Scheme of Examination and be examined periodically by a competent person.

The machine

Why the Ducale matters to the Fiorenzato owner

Fiorenzato's most common machine in the UK, and the single most frequent model in our examination records after the La Cimbali M39. A big horizontal copper boiler, one element, straightforward pipework.

In practice you will find it in cafés, restaurants and hotels running two or three groups on a single steam boiler — which shapes what the examination looks like on site: how the machine is accessed, how long it can be offline, and how much scale it has accumulated.

On the day

  • The steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition.
  • The safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested.
  • The pressure gauge is verified against our calibrated test gauge, not against itself.
  • A 3 group boiler holds more water than a 2 group, so the drain, refill and heat-up all take longer — allow the full appointment window.
  • The Written Scheme of Examination names the vessel and the protective devices it covers.

All prices exclude VAT. The additional drain and heat-up time a 3 group boiler needs. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

Filters are fitted on site by an engineer and are not posted out. The filter price applies when ordered with a PSSR examination, service, call-out or water test; booked alone it is charged at the standard call-out.

What we see on this model

  • The 3 group carries nearly twice the boiler volume of the 2 group — 19.7 litres against 10.4 — so the two are not the same appointment, even though they look the same from the front.
  • There is also a Ducale Compact at 4.7 litres. It shares the name but not the vessel, so check the data plate before quoting the examination.
  • Legacy 1/2/3-group traditional machine. Archived Fiorenzato data: 1-group 4.5 L / 1750 W / 47 kg; 2-group 12 L / 3500 W / 64 kg; 3-group 18 L / 3500 W. Fiorenzato's current site is grinder-focused and no Ducale page remains, so treat it as discontinued. No fault reports, service intervals or part numbers were found - do not invent them.
  • The Compact is a genuinely different vessel — 4.7 litres against 10.4 — and measures only 490 mm wide, which is what makes it fit a small kitchen. Same name, half the boiler: check the data plate before quoting the examination.

What actually goes wrong on a Fiorenzato Ducale

Owners usually call us with a symptom, not a diagnosis. This is what that symptom most often turns out to be on this machine, and what putting it right involves.

Common faults on the Fiorenzato Ducale
SymptomUsual causeWhat fixes it
Machine will not heat and the LED is off. No power at the socket, or the machine switch is set to 0. Check the electrical outlet and turn the switch away from 0.
Machine will not heat but the LED is on. The switch is not in the heating position. Set the switch to 2.
Machine is warm but will not brew coffee. No water reaching the groups. Check all water connections (mains, softener, pump inlet).
No hot water from the hot-water outlet. Low boiler water level or the boiler is not pressurised. Check the level indicator and that the steam gauge reads 0.8-1.3 bar.

These are faults documented for this model, not a generic list.

How much does a PSSR examination cost on a Fiorenzato Ducale?

A standalone examination is £295 + VAT, because the additional drain and heat-up time a 3 group boiler needs. Combined with a front-end service it is £500 + VAT, which is what most cafés, restaurants and hotels running two or three groups on a single steam boiler choose, since the boiler has to be drained for the examination either way. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

How often does a Fiorenzato Ducale need examining?

The Written Scheme of Examination sets the interval, and for a commercial machine used in cafés, restaurants and hotels running two or three groups on a single steam boiler it is typically 12 to 14 months. A 3 group boiler holds a larger volume of water, so scale accumulates faster than in a smaller machine on the same duty and the scheme usually sets the shorter interval.

How long does a Fiorenzato Ducale examination take, and what happens on the day?

A 3 group boiler holds more water than a 2 group, so the drain, refill and heat-up all take longer — allow the full appointment window. The visit runs: the steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition. the safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested. The gauge is then verified against our calibrated test gauge, the system is pressure tested and held, and the machine is re-assembled, refilled, heated and function tested. The Written Scheme of Examination, signed report and asset record follow within 48 hours.
