Quick answer
A PSSR examination is the periodic inspection of an espresso machine's steam boiler, its protective devices and the pipework that could give rise to danger, carried out by a competent person under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. Steam is a relevant fluid and steam systems are in scope at any pressure and any volume, so any workplace coffee machine with a steam boiler needs a Written Scheme of Examination and periodic examination.

The compliance product. A full pressure system examination carried out on site, documented, submitted and certified — the document your insurer, landlord or acquirer will ask to see.
The engineers in our network examine any make or model, whether or not we supplied it, and the examination scope follows the machine's boiler configuration.
The engineers in our network examine any traditional espresso machine and most bean-to-cup machines, whatever the make or model and whether or not we supplied it. The examination scope follows the machine's boiler configuration, not its badge.
Service 02
Some insurers inspect commercial coffee machine boilers with their own inspector rather than accepting a report from a competent person. That inspector will not open a pressurised vessel — so the machine has to be prepared and then closed again by an engineer.
This is an on-site service for businesses whose boilers are directly inspected by their insurance company's inspector. Our engineer prepares the machine before the inspection, stays while it is carried out, and leaves the machine assembled, filled and working. It is assistance, not a second examination.
A fixed fee for the first three hours, whatever the group count. If the inspection runs longer, additional time is charged at £65 per hour.

Service 03
The machine has to be drained and stripped for the statutory test anyway. Bundling the front-end service into the same visit removes a second call-out and a second labour charge — which is why this is the option most sites choose.
| Machine profile | Typical models | Consumable parts included | On-site time | Price + VAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-group traditional | Sanremo Cube, Fracino Bambino, Linea Micra / Mini | Group gasket, shower plate, anti-vac valve seal, safety valve | ~2 hours | £405 |
| 2-group traditional | Linea Classic, Sanremo Capri / Café Racer, Eagle One, Astoria, Conti | 2× group gaskets, 2× shower plates, anti-vac valve, certified safety valve, steam wand o-rings | ~2.5 hours | £440 |
| 3-group traditional | Heavy-duty high-volume high-street setups | 3× group gaskets, 3× shower plates, anti-vac valve, certified safety valve, tap rebuild washers | ~3 hours | £500 |
Premium ranges are priced individually. La Marzocco, Eversys and Rex-Royal use proprietary or dealer-only parts, so their bundles sit above this ladder: La Marzocco from £495, Rex-Royal £585 and Eversys £645. A 12-month La Marzocco kit alone is £59–64, and its boiler safety valve is £126 where a generic one is £17. Each model page shows the exact figure for that machine.
For comparison: a standalone on-site service on a bean-to-cup machine like a Rex-Royal runs £250–£450 before major parts, and dealers usually sell it as a contract instead — around £1,130 a year for an S2 or S300, covering parts, labour, call-outs and the PSSR checks. Our Rex-Royal bundle, service and examination together, is £585 + VAT.
Eversys works the same way. A single preventative maintenance visit is £300–£600 on the market for labour plus the manufacturer kit; a basic annual plan is £400–£600, and an inclusive contract with telemetry and call-outs runs £1,000–£2,200. Our Eversys bundle is £645 + VAT, and the kit itself is quoted at cost with the visit because its price moves with the model and the cycle count.
La Marzocco is a mechanical job, not a modular one. A one-off annual service runs £350–£650 including the manufacturer kit — engineer fee £200–£350 plus roughly £120 for a 2-group front-end kit. Annual support contracts sit at £800–£1,100 for a Linea PB or Classic S and £1,200–£1,650 for a KB90 or Strada. Our bundle is £695 + VAT on a 2–3 group and £495 + VAT on a single group, with the kit charged at cost.
Group gaskets and shower plates replaced, dispersion screws cleaned, anti-vac valve serviced, steam and water tap washers renewed, backflush and detergent cycle completed.
Boiler drained and flushed, probe and level check, safety valve verified, expansion and pump pressure checked and reset to specification.
Full statutory examination in the same strip-down, written scheme written and backed by CoffeeSafe and an asset record — one invoice, one visit.
Heating elements, boiler shells, steam valve assemblies, solenoid valves, pumps, control boards, flow meters, grinder burrs and any component damaged by scale or frost. If we find one of these is required, you get a fixed written price before any work continues — and you can decline it. See parts & exclusions.

Scale is what kills boilers, elements and valves, and it is the one failure that is entirely preventable. A Brita Purity system costs less than the descale it prevents — and a filter history is the easiest compliance evidence you will ever produce.

These prices apply when the filter is fitted during a PSSR examination, a service, a breakdown call-out or a water test. The machine is already drained or open, so the fitting costs you nothing extra.
We do not post filters out. Every cartridge is fitted on site by an engineer — that is why the price includes a hardness and chlorine test, the bypass set to your measured water, and a check of the head, hoses and vessel for leaks and scale. A filter with no other work booked is charged at the standard call-out.

Why it matters for compliance
Excessive scale is a documented cause of boiler wall degradation. Filter history supports the safe operating limits recorded on your Written Scheme of Examination — and it is the cheapest defect to avoid.

A down machine is lost revenue by the hour. We diagnose properly, carry the parts that actually fail, and tell you honestly when a repair is no longer economic.
Boiler not reaching pressure, fluctuating gauge, steam wand weak or wet, auto-fill cycling or failing.
Group, valve, fitting and boiler gasket leaks; pump and expansion valve faults; blocked restrictors and scale-bound groups.
Element failure, tripping breakers, probe and level faults, control board and keypad diagnosis, solenoid and relay testing.
Inconsistent shots, burr wear, blocked chutes, dosing faults and calibration drift on commercial grinders.
Includes the first hour on site nationwide. Subsequent labour is charged at £65 per hour. Parts are quoted before fitting. Where a breakdown is covered by a maintenance agreement, the call-out element is credited.
Service 06
Burrs that are worn or clogged will undo the work of a perfect machine. An £89 service is the cheapest quality upgrade available to any venue — and £75 when we are already on site.
Questions
Straight answers on scope, timing, parts and what happens if a machine fails. For the statutory background — who is in scope, what a Written Scheme of Examination must contain and how often an examination is due — read the complete PSSR guide.
0208 037 9340The boiler is isolated, depressurised and fully drained, then inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition. Protective devices, fittings and the pressure gauge are checked against a calibrated test gauge, and the system is pressure tested and held before being re-assembled, refilled, heated and function tested. You receive a Written Scheme of Examination, a report of examination, an asset record and a boiler-plate compliance sticker.
CoffeeSafe write and back the Written Scheme of Examination. It is written specifically for the machine on site — its boiler, protective devices and the pipework that could give rise to danger. The on-site examination is carried out by an independent, CoffeeSafe-registered engineer from our network, who certifies the result in their own right.
Roughly two hours on a 1 group machine, two and a half hours on a 2 group machine and three hours on a 3 group machine. Because the front-end service and the statutory examination share the same strip-down, the bundle is faster than booking the two jobs separately.
Consumable parts — group gaskets, shower plates, anti-vac valve seals and, where listed, a certified safety valve — are included. Elements, boiler shells, steam valve assemblies, solenoids, pumps, control boards and grinder burrs are quoted separately, always with a fixed price before any work continues.
Yes. Water treatment, descaling, seal replacement, grinder and brew-unit servicing are all carried out on bean-to-cup machines. Whether the machine also needs a statutory PSSR examination depends on whether it holds steam under pressure, which we confirm from the make and model.
The engineer explains what additional work is needed to bring it into compliance — the component, the reason and the remedy — or, where it cannot be certified, why not and what the realistic options are. You receive written findings with photographs and a fixed price to put it right, with no obligation to proceed.
Yes. The engineers in our network examine and service any commercial machine regardless of who supplied or installed it, and we do not sell machines, so there is no incentive to condemn equipment that can be repaired. For machines we have never seen, we ask for the make, model, group count and postcode before quoting.
Tell us the machine make, model and postcode. We will tell you exactly what is required, what it costs and how long it takes — before you commit.
