Coffee machine PSSR examinations by brand and model

Every commercial espresso machine with a steam boiler needs a Written Scheme of Examination — whatever the badge on the front. We cover any traditional machine and most bean-to-cup. Find your model below for the examination scope, the published rate and the faults we see most often on that machine.

The ranges our engineers cover

The price of a statutory examination follows the machine's boiler configuration, not its price tag — a two-boiler machine has two vessels to examine whatever badge is on the front.

Every model we cover, with its boiler data

Two independent sources, and we keep them apart. Where the manufacturer publishes boiler capacity we cite their page. Where they do not, we use what our own examiners recorded on that model in the field. 68 of the 71 models below carry the manufacturer’s own figures, and 3 carry boiler data we measured ourselves during examinations. Where we have neither, we leave it blank rather than estimate.

Bean-to-cup & superautomatic

The machine nobody examines

A bean-to-cup machine arrives on a coffee supply contract. Nobody in the buying chain thinks of it as pressure equipment, and the supplier’s maintenance contract looks as though it covers everything. It does not cover the statutory examination. Across our own records these are the single largest category of machine with no Written Scheme at all.

The boiler is sealed inside the body, behind the brew unit and the grinders, and on most models it holds between 0.8 and 8 litres. That does not put it out of scope. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000 and steam systems are in scope at any pressure and any volume — a sealed vessel is still a pressure vessel.

The highest working pressures across the automatic machines we publish are significantly higher than the 1.2 bar standard found across the traditional estate as a whole. Higher pressure on a smaller, thinner vessel is exactly the combination a Written Scheme exists to catch.

Sealing the vessel changes how it is examined, not whether. On a sealed stainless boiler the examination is external — wall thickness, corrosion at the fittings, and the condition of every connection — with internal inspection by borescope only where the vessel design allows access. The safety valve, expansion valve, pressure sensor and thermal cut-outs are tested individually.

Working pressure is set at commissioning and recorded on the machine's data plate. On these sealed vessels the steam safety valve is typically rated 2.3–2.4 bar, against 1.8 bar on a traditional machine — which is why the examination looks at the valve and the vessel fit, not just the gauge.

Questions

Model questions, answered

If your machine is not listed, it is still almost certainly in scope — send us the make and model and we will confirm.

0208 037 9340

Do all commercial coffee machines need a PSSR examination?

Yes, if the machine is in a workplace. Steam is a relevant fluid under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 and steam systems are in scope at any pressure and any volume, so any coffee machine with a steam boiler — whichever brand or model — must have a Written Scheme of Examination and be examined periodically by a competent person.

How much does a PSSR examination cost by model?

It depends on the boiler volume and the group count rather than the badge. A 1 or 2 group machine is £265 + VAT and a 3 group machine is £295 + VAT. Call 0208 037 9340 and we will give you the figure for your exact model.

Do you hold parts for these machines?

We carry the consumables that actually fail — group gaskets, shower plates, anti-vac valves and certified safety valves — for the ranges we work on. Anything beyond that is quoted before fitting, and we will tell you honestly when a machine is not worth repairing.

Know your model? One call prices it.

Machine make, model, group count and postcode — that is all we need to give you a fixed figure and a date.
