Rancilio Classe 5 Eco — PSSR examination & servicing

Classe 5 Eco machines are used in schools, institutions, workplace dining and contract catering nationwide. The engineer carries out the statutory PSSR examination, the front-end service and the water treatment on this model — a standalone examination is £265 + VAT, or £440 + VAT with the service included.

1 and 2 group Single boiler Written Scheme of Examination

Quick answer

Does a Rancilio Classe 5 Eco need a PSSR examination?

Yes, if it operates in a workplace. It carries a single steam boiler with its own protective devices, which is the pressure system in scope. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000 and steam systems are covered at any pressure and any volume, so the boiler must have a Written Scheme of Examination and be examined periodically by a competent person.

The machine

Why the Classe 5 Eco matters to the Rancilio owner

A highly functional, value-driven machine found in institutional setups and schools.

In practice you will find it in schools, institutions, workplace dining and contract catering — which shapes what the examination looks like on site: how the machine is accessed, how long it can be offline, and how much scale it has accumulated.

On the day

  • The steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition.
  • The safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested.
  • The pressure gauge is verified against our calibrated test gauge, not against itself.
  • A single compact boiler drains and refills quickly, which makes this the shortest appointment we book.
  • The Written Scheme of Examination names the vessel and the protective devices it covers.

All prices exclude VAT. A single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

Filters are fitted on site by an engineer and are not posted out. The filter price applies when ordered with a PSSR examination, service, call-out or water test; booked alone it is charged at the standard call-out.

What we see on this model

  • Education and public-sector sites need certificates that satisfy a premises manager and often a term-time-only maintenance calendar.
  • Value machines are economical to maintain — the priority is keeping the examination current so cover is never in question.
  • New energy-saving Classe 5 variant: insulated boiler and insulating panels, quoted 15% energy saving against the standard Classe 5, Steady Brew group, 2 groups only, standard or tall ('raised') body, in Crono, USB and S versions. IMPORTANT: Rancilio does not publish a separate Eco fault list. The error codes quoted here are the Classe 5 range list (E01 fill timeout, W01-W03 flowmeter, E18 12 V missing) from the Classe 5 use-and-maintenance manual, which covers the S/USB electronics; confirm against the Eco manual on the machine's own serial before quoting a code to a customer. Boiler size for the Eco is not published on Rancilio's page, and the part numbers quoted are the Classe 5 S/USB catalogue numbers - confirm against the serial plate before ordering.

Fault finder

What actually goes wrong on a Rancilio Classe 5 Eco

Owners usually call us with a symptom, not a diagnosis. This is what that symptom most often turns out to be on this machine, and what putting it right involves.

Common faults on the Rancilio Classe 5 Eco
SymptomUsual causeWhat fixes it
Machine will not build pressure or dispense — E01 or E02 on the display E01 fill time-out (no water, failed fill solenoid) or E02 boiler-pressure time-out. Check supply, filter and softener, then the fill solenoid.
A group meters badly or the dose wanders — W01 / W02 / W03 Broken wire from the flowmeter for that group, or a fouled flowmeter. Check the flowmeter wiring first, then clean or replace the flowmeter.
Boiler level wrong or false fills — E14 on a Classe 9, SL lamp on a Classe 7 Level probe fouled or shorted. SL means the boiler level is too low. Clean or replace the level probe.
Alarm after a period of use — E19 over-pressure boiler Boiler over-pressure: pressure sensor or controller fault, or a filling valve passing. Test the pressure sensor and the filling valve.
A group will not fire, or the valve clicks but nothing happens — W12–W17 Short circuit or broken wire on a group valve coil. Check the coil and its wiring.
Weak steam and slow recovery that looks like a fault Classe 9 has a documented REDUCED POWER mode running only two of three heating elements. Check whether reduced power is selected before diagnosing the boiler.
One group runs slow or dribbles; flow falls off over weeks. The group gigleur/restrictor is blocking. Rancilio brought out a Teflon (10701616) and later a NANEFLON (10060622 / 10060623) gigleur specifically because hard water blocks the standard restrictor quickly. Strip the group, clean or replace the gigleur; fit the NANEFLON version in hard-water areas and fix the water treatment.
Portafilter creeps past centre and the group weeps when locked in. Worn group-head gasket (peroxide-cured rubber hardens and takes a set). Fit a new group gasket 36301046; smear food-grade silicone grease on reassembly.
Machine stops with a boiler fill timeout (E01) and will not heat. No water reaching the boiler: mains/filter closed or blocked, blocked inlet filter, or a fill solenoid that is not opening. Restore the water supply, clean or replace the inlet filter, test the fill solenoid and its wiring.
Scale on the level probe, fittings and heat exchanger; boiler over/under-fills or shots run cold. Hard water with no working softener: scale on the gigleur, the level probe and the heat exchanger. Rancilio released the Teflon and then the NANEFLON gigleur specifically for water that blocks restrictions quickly. Descale, clean or replace the level probe, and put the site on soft/filtered water.

These are faults documented for this model, not a generic list.

How much does a PSSR examination cost on a Rancilio Classe 5 Eco?

A standalone examination is £265 + VAT, because a single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. Combined with a front-end service it is £440 + VAT, which is what most schools, institutions, workplace dining and contract catering choose, since the boiler has to be drained for the examination either way. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

How often does a Rancilio Classe 5 Eco need examining?

The Written Scheme of Examination sets the interval, and for a commercial machine used in schools, institutions, workplace dining and contract catering it is typically 12 to 14 months. A single boiler on this duty normally sits at the middle of that range unless the water is hard, which we test on the day and report with the certificate.

How long does a Rancilio Classe 5 Eco examination take, and what happens on the day?

A single compact boiler drains and refills quickly, which makes this the shortest appointment we book. The visit runs: the steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition. the safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested. The gauge is then verified against our calibrated test gauge, the system is pressure tested and held, and the machine is re-assembled, refilled, heated and function tested. The Written Scheme of Examination, signed report and asset record follow within 48 hours.
