Sanremo Zoe — PSSR examination & servicing
Zoe machines are used in mid-tier cafés, bars, small restaurants and delis nationwide. The engineer carries out the statutory PSSR examination, the front-end service and the water treatment on this model — a standalone examination is £265 + VAT, or £440 + VAT with the service included.
Quick answer
Does a Sanremo Zoe need a PSSR examination?
Yes, if it operates in a workplace. It carries a single steam boiler with its own protective devices, which is the pressure system in scope. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000 and steam systems are covered at any pressure and any volume, so the boiler must have a Written Scheme of Examination and be examined periodically by a competent person.

The machine
Why the Zoe matters to the Sanremo owner
An entry-level staple with built-in shot timers, common in mid-tier cafés and bars.
In practice you will find it in mid-tier cafés, bars, small restaurants and delis — which shapes what the examination looks like on site: how the machine is accessed, how long it can be offline, and how much scale it has accumulated.
On the day
- The steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition.
- The safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested.
- The pressure gauge is verified against our calibrated test gauge, not against itself.
- A single compact boiler drains and refills quickly, which makes this the shortest appointment we book.
- The Written Scheme of Examination names the vessel and the protective devices it covers.

All prices exclude VAT. A single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. We confirm the exact figure on the call.
Filters are fitted on site by an engineer and are not posted out. The filter price applies when ordered with a PSSR examination, service, call-out or water test; booked alone it is charged at the standard call-out.
What we see on this model
- A compact single-boiler machine, so the examination covers one pressure vessel and one set of protective devices — quick to drain and inspect.
- Entry-level machines are frequently the ones that have never had a Written Scheme of Examination drawn up: the service invoice exists, the statutory document does not.
- The only Zoe-specific fault table published is for the ZOE COMPETITION (Ed. 09/2018 manual and parts catalogue); treat it as documented for the Competition and family-typical for the base Zoe. Zoe shares the group gasket (10502110) and the 120 mm level probe (10112064A) with the Verona RS.

| Configuration | Steam boiler |
|---|---|
| 2 group compact | 7.0 L |
| 2 group | 7.0 L |
| 3 group | 10.0 L |
Manufacturer's published boiler capacities. Where a maker publishes no figure we say so rather than estimate. Dimensions 530 x 524 x 512 mm; net weight 45 kg. Sanremo's own Zoe brochure gives the boiler as 7 L (Compact and 2 group) and 10 L (3 group) in AISI 316L, with heat exchanger groups - so there is no separate brew boiler and brew_boiler_l is null by design, not missing. Boiler power 2.5 kW (Compact) / 2.7 kW (2 group single phase) up to 4.5 kW, and 4.5-6.0 kW on the 3 group (total power 2.85 / 3.0 / up to 6.6 kW). Net weight 45 / 55 / 69 kg (Tall versions 49 / 61 / 73). Published boiler working pressure is 0.8-1 bar (0.08-0.1 MPa) - working_bar here is the top of that range. Caveat on the safety valve: the English edition of the Zoe Compact service manual prints '(1.8 Bar)' beside the boiler-working-pressure row while its own MPa column reads 0.08-0.1, and the Italian edition of the same table gives the boiler working pressure as 0.8-1 bar and mains water as max 6 bar. That 1.8 bar annotation is not labelled as a safety-valve setting, so safety_valve_bar is left null rather than inferred. Dimensions are from the brochure drawing (530/720/950 wide, 524 deep, 512 high; Tall version 570 high); the Compact service manual instead quotes 530 x 528 x 543 mm.
Service interval. No calendar interval is published. The Zoe manual's routine maintenance is daily: automatic group wash with detergent in a blind filter, rinse cycle, then daily cleaning of groups, filters and body.
Fault finder
What actually goes wrong on a Sanremo Zoe
Owners usually call us with a symptom, not a diagnosis. This is what that symptom most often turns out to be on this machine, and what putting it right involves.
| Symptom | Usual cause | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| No water from the group, or none anywhere | closed mains/filter tap, clogged water-intake coupling filter, or clogged nozzle/gigleur | open taps, remove and clean the intake filter, check resin regeneration, clean the nozzle/gigleur. |
| Machine full of water but not heating | Sanremo lists operator error first: main switch set to '1' instead of '2'. Real causes are burnt-out element and failed temperature sensor | turn the main switch to '2', if still no heat, element and temperature sensor. |
| Taps drip when closed, or leak under the knobs only while opening | two different seals: faulty sealing gasket or a foreign body in the seal seat (closed drip), worn tap spindle gaskets (leak on opening) | replace the respective seal, clear debris from the seat. |
| Coffee leaks around the portafilter rim or over the basket edge | worn group gasket, uneven/damaged filter edge, dirt in the filter-holder seat, clogged shower screens | replace group gasket, clean seat and screens, discard damaged baskets. |
| No steam or no hot water | clogged steam nozzle, scale-blocked internal dispensing ducts, failed steam tap, or failed hot-water dispensing solenoid | clean nozzle, descale the delivery circuit, replace tap or solenoid. |
| Water is not dispensed by the unit. | Water mains or filter taps closed; clogged intake fitting filter; clogged nozzle. | Open the taps; clean the intake filter and check resin regeneration; clean the nozzle. |
| The boiler is not heating. | Main switch set to '1' instead of '2' (listed first by Sanremo); otherwise element or probe. | Turn the main switch to '2'; if still cold, test the element and temperature sensor. |
| Water/steam taps leak when closed, or under the knobs when opening. | Faulty sealing gasket or a foreign body in the seal seat (closed); faulty tap spindle gaskets (on opening). | Replace the seal and clear the seat; replace the spindle gaskets. |
| Coffee overflows from the edges of the filter holder. | Dirt in the filter-holder seat, a worn group gasket, or clogged group heads. | Clean the seat, replace the group gasket, clean or replace the heads. |
| Coffee is too cold. | Machine not ready — group/boiler not at temperature. | Wait for the set temperature; if it never reaches it, check the heating circuit. |
These are faults documented for this model, not a generic list.

How much does a PSSR examination cost on a Sanremo Zoe?
A standalone examination is £265 + VAT, because a single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. Combined with a front-end service it is £440 + VAT, which is what most mid-tier cafés, bars, small restaurants and delis choose, since the boiler has to be drained for the examination either way. We confirm the exact figure on the call.
How often does a Sanremo Zoe need examining?
The Written Scheme of Examination sets the interval, and for a commercial machine used in mid-tier cafés, bars, small restaurants and delis it is typically 12 to 14 months. A single boiler on this duty normally sits at the middle of that range unless the water is hard, which we test on the day and report with the certificate.
How long does a Sanremo Zoe examination take, and what happens on the day?
A single compact boiler drains and refills quickly, which makes this the shortest appointment we book. The visit runs: the steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition. the safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested. The gauge is then verified against our calibrated test gauge, the system is pressure tested and held, and the machine is re-assembled, refilled, heated and function tested. The Written Scheme of Examination, signed report and asset record follow within 48 hours.
