Conti Monte Carlo — PSSR examination & servicing

Monte Carlo machines are used in mid-sized independent specialty shops and small groups nationwide. The engineer carries out the statutory PSSR examination, the front-end service and the water treatment on this model — a standalone examination is £265 + VAT, or £440 + VAT with the service included.

2 group Single boiler Written Scheme of Examination

Quick answer

Does a Conti Monte Carlo need a PSSR examination?

Yes, if it operates in a workplace. It carries a single steam boiler with its own protective devices, which is the pressure system in scope. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000 and steam systems are covered at any pressure and any volume, so the boiler must have a Written Scheme of Examination and be examined periodically by a competent person.

The machine

Why the Monte Carlo matters to the Conti owner

A traditional machine used by mid-sized independent specialty coffee shops.

In practice you will find it in mid-sized independent specialty shops and small groups — which shapes what the examination looks like on site: how the machine is accessed, how long it can be offline, and how much scale it has accumulated.

On the day

  • The steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition.
  • The safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested.
  • The pressure gauge is verified against our calibrated test gauge, not against itself.
  • A 2 group single boiler is one drain and one refill, comfortably inside the standard appointment window.
  • The Written Scheme of Examination names the vessel and the protective devices it covers.

All prices exclude VAT. A single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

Filters are fitted on site by an engineer and are not posted out. The filter price applies when ordered with a PSSR examination, service, call-out or water test; booked alone it is charged at the standard call-out.

What we see on this model

  • The steam boiler and its protective devices are what the examination covers, and the visit length follows boiler volume and group count.
  • 2 group: 10 L steam boiler (6.5 L hot water, 3.5 L steam) and 2 x 0.9 L coffee boilers; 3 group: 14 L and 3 x 0.9 L. 89 kg / 103 kg empty. Three-phase machine; can run single-phase 230 V with power management steps 1-6 (2G 1900-6700 W, 3G 2600-9600 W; K variants up to 14100 W) and a 3x6 mm cable, Conti ref 103600. Coffee boiler elements 1000 W (2500 W on K).

Fault finder

What actually goes wrong on a Conti Monte Carlo

Owners usually call us with a symptom, not a diagnosis. This is what that symptom most often turns out to be on this machine, and what putting it right involves.

Common faults on the Conti Monte Carlo
SymptomUsual causeWhat fixes it
A t-degree alarm on the display identifying a boiler or group numbered alarm table A01-A29 includes per-boiler and per-group temperature probe alarms identify the numbered probe from the table and replace that probe.
Heating stops, low-level safety alarm (A22) low-level safety probe detected no water for more than 2 seconds, so heating is stopped restore water/level, then check the safety probe.
Boiler will not reach heat, A23 boiler heat time-out element, contactor/SSR, or probe, test the heating chain.
A group stops, flow-meter time-out alarms A27/A28/A29 flow meter time-out after more than 5 seconds, Conti's own note says 'check for clogged coffee group' check the group for a blockage and the flowmeter.
Scheduled service kits 450200 (half-year) and 450201 (annual, including the flow-meter non-return valve 415167) fit the kit at the stated interval.
A boiler probe alarm; one coffee boiler reads wrong or heating is inhibited. A01 / A03 / A05 - coffee boiler 1/2/3 temperature probe short-circuit or disconnected. Check the probe, its connection, then the electronic board.
Heating stops with a low-level alarm (A22). The low-level safety probe detected no water for more than 2 s, so boiler heating is stopped. Restore water and confirm the boiler fills, then check the safety probe (and descale it) and the board.
Boiler never reaches temperature; A23 boiler time-out. Time allocated to boiler heating exceeded - water inlet, boiler probe, probe connection, board, heaters or relays, or the programmed heating time. Work the list: inlet, probe, element and relay; check the heating-time setting last.
Coffee stops mid-shot; A27 / A28 / A29 flowmeter time-out. No pulse from flowmeter 1/2/3 within 5 s - flowmeter, its connection, the board, or a clogged coffee group. Check flowmeter pulses and connection, then look for a blocked group.
One group runs cold or reads oddly; A09 / A11 / A13. Group 1/2/3 temperature probe short-circuit or disconnected. Check that group's probe and connection, then the board.

These are faults documented for this model, not a generic list.

How much does a PSSR examination cost on a Conti Monte Carlo?

A standalone examination is £265 + VAT, because a single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. Combined with a front-end service it is £440 + VAT, which is what most mid-sized independent specialty shops and small groups choose, since the boiler has to be drained for the examination either way. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

How often does a Conti Monte Carlo need examining?

The Written Scheme of Examination sets the interval, and for a commercial machine used in mid-sized independent specialty shops and small groups it is typically 12 to 14 months. A single boiler on this duty normally sits at the middle of that range unless the water is hard, which we test on the day and report with the certificate.

How long does a Conti Monte Carlo examination take, and what happens on the day?

A 2 group single boiler is one drain and one refill, comfortably inside the standard appointment window. The visit runs: the steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition. the safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested. The gauge is then verified against our calibrated test gauge, the system is pressure tested and held, and the machine is re-assembled, refilled, heated and function tested. The Written Scheme of Examination, signed report and asset record follow within 48 hours.
