Iberital Expression Pro — PSSR examination & servicing

Expression Pro machines are used in commercial catering, restaurants, hotels and contract sites nationwide. The engineer carries out the statutory PSSR examination, the front-end service and the water treatment on this model — a standalone examination is £265 + VAT, or £440 + VAT with the service included.

2 group Single boiler Written Scheme of Examination

Quick answer

Does a Iberital Expression Pro need a PSSR examination?

Yes, if it operates in a workplace. It carries a single steam boiler with its own protective devices, which is the pressure system in scope. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000 and steam systems are covered at any pressure and any volume, so the boiler must have a Written Scheme of Examination and be examined periodically by a competent person.

The machine

Why the Expression Pro matters to the Iberital owner

A capable machine popular with commercial caterers.

In practice you will find it in commercial catering, restaurants, hotels and contract sites — which shapes what the examination looks like on site: how the machine is accessed, how long it can be offline, and how much scale it has accumulated.

On the day

  • The steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition.
  • The safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested.
  • The pressure gauge is verified against our calibrated test gauge, not against itself.
  • A 2 group single boiler is one drain and one refill, comfortably inside the standard appointment window.
  • The Written Scheme of Examination names the vessel and the protective devices it covers.

All prices exclude VAT. A single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

Filters are fitted on site by an engineer and are not posted out. The filter price applies when ordered with a PSSR examination, service, call-out or water test; booked alone it is charged at the standard call-out.

What we see on this model

  • Caterers run these hard, so element and scale condition are what the examination most often finds.
  • Dual-boiler: 3 L coffee boiler and 8.3 L steam boiler on the 2-group (4 L / 11.5 L on the 3-group), 4200 W, volumetric dosing, TFT touchscreen, pre-infusion. Part numbers are from Iberital's own IB7/Expression Pro parts catalogue V10.2.

Fault finder

What actually goes wrong on a Iberital Expression Pro

Owners usually call us with a symptom, not a diagnosis. This is what that symptom most often turns out to be on this machine, and what putting it right involves.

Common faults on the Iberital Expression Pro
SymptomUsual causeWhat fixes it
All button-pad LEDs flash together and the machine stops filling / stops dead boiler did not reach the level probe inside the fill window (2 minutes on Expression Pro), so the control unit faults - no water, blocked inlet, or the control unit itself restore supply and clear the inlet, then reset by switching to 0 and back, if it repeats it is the level circuit or control unit.
A shot is selected, the LED flashes, but the shot keeps running and the volume is wrong (dose records as zero when programming) no impulses from that group's flow meter for 5 seconds - the meter-cover signal bypass, a poor connection, or the board check the flow-meter connector and loom, then the meter, the manual routes it to service.
The shot stops by itself after a very long run, LED still flashing delivery too slow, or coffee ground too fine / packed too tight ('excess feed from flow meter', over 2 min IB7 / 3 min Expression Pro) correct grind and dose, check for a restriction.
'Boiler temperature' alarm and the machine stops heating boiler above 140 deg C for more than 5 seconds - stuck or overshooting thermoregulation device: pressure switch, thermostat or probe the alarm clears when temperature falls, find and replace the overshooting device.
'T.ProbeUnconnect' after a board/control-unit replacement, machine will not heat usually NOT a failed probe - the replacement control unit has the wrong heating configuration selected (display + pressure-switch mode vs probe mode) re-programme the heating configuration rather than swapping the probe.
All five dose LEDs flash together and the machine stops during boiler fill. Boiler fill timeout - 2 minutes on Expression Pro: no water supply, obstructed inlet, or the board not commanding autofill (Iberital installation and operation manual, alarm A). Restore water supply/bleed the inlet, switch off and back on to reset the fill cycle; if it repeats, check the inlet and board output.
Short-coffee LED flashes and the machine will not heat. Temperature probe interrupted/reading 0 degC for 5 seconds (alarm B). Check the probe wiring and connector; reset the board or correct the sensor type in the technical menu.
The selected dose LED flashes and dispensing does not stop. No pulses from the volumetric meter for 5 seconds - flowmeter cover signal leak, bad connection, or board fault (alarm C). Check the flowmeter plug and wiring, replace the flowmeter; board last.
Dispensing cuts out at 3 minutes with the dose LED flashing. Dispensing timeout: water circuit obstruction, or grind too fine / dose too high (alarm D). Clear the group and shower, coarsen the grind or reduce the dose.
Maintenance alarm appears and the machine keeps flagging service. Service counter reached (alarm F, set by number of services in the alarm configuration). Carry out the service, then reset the maintenance counter in the alarm menu.

These are faults documented for this model, not a generic list.

How a boiler of this size is examined, how often, and who carries the duty — see the complete PSSR guide.

How much does a PSSR examination cost on a Iberital Expression Pro?

A standalone examination is £265 + VAT, because a single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. Combined with a front-end service it is £440 + VAT, which is what most commercial catering, restaurants, hotels and contract sites choose, since the boiler has to be drained for the examination either way. We confirm the exact figure on the call.

How often does a Iberital Expression Pro need examining?

The Written Scheme of Examination sets the interval, and for a commercial machine used in commercial catering, restaurants, hotels and contract sites it is typically 12 to 14 months. A single boiler on this duty normally sits at the middle of that range unless the water is hard, which we test on the day and report with the certificate.

How long does a Iberital Expression Pro examination take, and what happens on the day?

A 2 group single boiler is one drain and one refill, comfortably inside the standard appointment window. The visit runs: the steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition. the safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested. The gauge is then verified against our calibrated test gauge, the system is pressure tested and held, and the machine is re-assembled, refilled, heated and function tested. The Written Scheme of Examination, signed report and asset record follow within 48 hours.
