Faema President — PSSR examination & servicing
President machines are used in design-focused venues, premium independents and hotel bars nationwide. The engineer carries out the statutory PSSR examination, the front-end service and the water treatment on this model — a standalone examination is £265 + VAT, or £440 + VAT with the service included.
Quick answer
Does a Faema President need a PSSR examination?
Yes, if it operates in a workplace. It carries a single steam boiler with its own protective devices, which is the pressure system in scope. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000 and steam systems are covered at any pressure and any volume, so the boiler must have a Written Scheme of Examination and be examined periodically by a competent person.

The machine
Why the President matters to the Faema owner
Known for its retro aesthetic, popular in high-end design-focused venues.
In practice you will find it in design-focused venues, premium independents and hotel bars — which shapes what the examination looks like on site: how the machine is accessed, how long it can be offline, and how much scale it has accumulated.
On the day
- The steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition.
- The safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested.
- The pressure gauge is verified against our calibrated test gauge, not against itself.
- A 2 group single boiler is one drain and one refill, comfortably inside the standard appointment window.
- The Written Scheme of Examination names the vessel and the protective devices it covers.

All prices exclude VAT. A single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. We confirm the exact figure on the call.
Filters are fitted on site by an engineer and are not posted out. The filter price applies when ordered with a PSSR examination, service, call-out or water test; booked alone it is charged at the standard call-out.
What we see on this model
- Retro-styled machines are often older than they look — condition, not age, is what the examination reports on.
- Where a machine is a listed fixture or part of an interior scheme, we work to avoid disturbing the surrounding joinery.
- The classic 1950s-60s spring-lever President, not the E98/E71-family machine. 2-group: 11 L boiler, 5.1 kW, 820 x 630 x 505 mm, 73 kg; 3-group: 17.5 L, 7.2 kW, three-phase only, 90 kg. Anything in service today is a refurbishment, so read the faults above as 'what fails on a President', not 'what fails weekly'. No Faema fault table exists for it.

| Configuration | Steam boiler |
|---|---|
| 2 group (President Termosifonic A/2) | 11.0 L |
| 3 group (President Termosifonic A/3) | 17.5 L |
| 2 group (President GTi A/2, independent coffee boilers) | 7.0 L |
| 3 group (President GTi A/3, independent coffee boilers) | 7.0 L |
Manufacturer's published boiler capacities. Where a maker publishes no figure we say so rather than estimate. Dimensions 820 x 630 x 505 mm; net weight 73 kg. Boiler capacity, element power, dimensions and weight are published per group configuration in Faema's own President datasheets, for both the single-boiler Termosifonic family (11 L 2-group / 17.5 L 3-group, heat exchanger) and the dual-boiler GTi family (7 L steam + 0.6 L independent coffee boiler per group). Faema publishes NO working pressure, design pressure or safety-valve set pressure for either family - these are null rather than estimated. Power is published as a range covering different element configurations; element_kw here is the top of the published range (A/2 single phase 4.3-5.1 kW, A/2 three phase 4.2-5.0 kW, A/3 three phase 6.2-7.2 kW). The 3-group Termosifonic is three-phase only. 'E98 President' is the older E98-series designation for the same President platform; the E98 handbooks carry no technical data table, so the current President datasheets are cited. For reference only, the Faema-pattern boiler safety valve sold for this family (Faema 2211115624) is set at 1.8 bar - that is a spare-part rating, not a published machine specification, so it is not entered as the machine's safety valve figure.
Service interval. No manufacturer interval - it is a vintage lever machine. Restoration practice: full strip, new gaskets and seals, element and safety-valve test, then condition-based servicing.

What actually goes wrong on a Faema President
Owners usually call us with a symptom, not a diagnosis. This is what that symptom most often turns out to be on this machine, and what putting it right involves.
| Symptom | Usual cause | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Heats slowly or not at all, will not hold pressure - often one set of element terminals open while the other still works | heating element failure | resistance-test each element circuit and replace the element (elements are still available). |
| A group casting weeps or a fitting will not tighten, on strip-down there are cracks | the cast group body cracks, propagating from threaded holes | replace the casting, a silver-solder repair only on non-critical areas. |
| Water weeping at the boiler lid or element flange, the gasket never seals properly | the brass boiler-lid and element flange faces are pitted and eroded where the hard gasket sits | resurface the flange back to a ring of bright brass, then a new gasket. |
| The boiler cannot be opened for service - nuts/studs shear or gall | boiler fasteners corrode and gall (steel/brass studs, stainless-on-stainless) | on reassembly use food-safe high-temperature anti-seize on all boiler threads and work them evenly. |
| Shots get progressively weaker and wetter, lever feel changes, drips from the group | the main lever spring is pitted/rusted and the piston seals have hardened | new main spring(s), new piston seals, clean and re-grease the bore, check the lever. |
| The safety valve constantly hisses or weeps and the machine keeps losing a little pressure | a tired, scale-fouled safety valve that no longer seats, plus a scaled or wrongly set thermosyphon restrictor | replace the safety valve, strip and clean the thermosyphon restrictor and set it. |
| Heats slowly or not at all, or one half of the element is dead while the other still reads a plausible resistance. | Heating element failure - one set of terminals open circuit (several megohms) while the other reads ~37 ohms. | Resistance-test each element circuit and replace the element; 230 V parts are far easier to source than 110 V. |
| A group casting weeps, or a fitting will not tighten; cracks run from the threaded holes. | Cast group body cracks propagating from threaded holes (some drilled off-centre at the factory) plus decades of over-tightening and corrosion. | Replace the casting; silver-solder only non-critical, low-pressure areas. |
| Water weeps at the boiler lid or element flange however tight the nuts are. | The brass flange faces are pitted where the hard fibre gasket sat, so a new gasket cannot crush into them. | Resurface the flange back to a ring of bright brass, then fit a new gasket and pressure-test. |
| The boiler cannot be opened - studs shear or gall and the fibre gaskets have set solid. | Corroded/galled steel and brass boiler fasteners; gaskets hardened onto the flanges. | Soak and pick out the old gaskets; on reassembly use food-safe high-temperature anti-seize on all boiler threads, stainless included. |
| Shots get weaker and wetter, lever feel changes, the group drips; the safety valve hisses slightly. | Pitted main lever spring, hardened piston seals, and a scaled or tired safety valve. | New main spring(s) and piston seals, clean and grease the bore, replace the safety valve. |
These are faults documented for this model, not a generic list.

How much does a PSSR examination cost on a Faema President?
A standalone examination is £265 + VAT, because a single steam boiler with one set of protective devices to examine. Combined with a front-end service it is £440 + VAT, which is what most design-focused venues, premium independents and hotel bars choose, since the boiler has to be drained for the examination either way. We confirm the exact figure on the call.
How often does a Faema President need examining?
The Written Scheme of Examination sets the interval, and for a commercial machine used in design-focused venues, premium independents and hotel bars it is typically 12 to 14 months. A single boiler on this duty normally sits at the middle of that range unless the water is hard, which we test on the day and report with the certificate.
How long does a Faema President examination take, and what happens on the day?
A 2 group single boiler is one drain and one refill, comfortably inside the standard appointment window. The visit runs: the steam boiler is drained and inspected internally with an endoscope for scale, corrosion and weld condition. the safety valve, anti-vac valve and fittings are checked and tested. The gauge is then verified against our calibrated test gauge, the system is pressure tested and held, and the machine is re-assembled, refilled, heated and function tested. The Written Scheme of Examination, signed report and asset record follow within 48 hours.
