PSSR inspections in Hackney & Dalston

Hackney and Dalston is where London's coffee industry actually makes things: roasteries in railway arches, production kitchens, small-batch bakeries, and the cafés that sell what they make. Machines here run long hours and often live in spaces that were never designed for them. PSSR.uk examines those steam boilers from £265 + VAT, and we are used to working in arches and industrial conversions with no obvious services.

Quick answer

Do coffee machines in Hackney & Dalston need a PSSR examination?

Yes, wherever the machine operates in a workplace. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000, and steam systems are in scope at any pressure and any volume — so a commercial machine with a steam boiler needs a Written Scheme of Examination and periodic examination by a competent person, whatever its group count or how hard it is worked.

What each visit includes

Scheduling in Hackney

  • Avoiding the weekend trade. Hackney and Dalston trade hardest on Saturday and Sunday. Monday and Tuesday are the natural service days here, and we hold them for E8 and E9 work.
  • Arches and yards. Most arch sites have a shared yard with limited turning. Tell us which arch and whether there is a gate code, and we will time the visit so we are not blocking a neighbour's delivery.
  • Parking controls. Mare Street, Kingsland Road and Dalston Lane are red or heavily controlled. There is usually a legal loading bay or yard within a short carry if you tell us where your entrance is.

What the Hackney sites look like

The premises mix decides what the examination involves, what tends to fail, and how the visit has to be scheduled.

Roasteries and production sites

A roastery machine is a working asset rather than a shopfront one, and it is usually the highest-duty machine on the site. Boiler scale from continuous operation is the recurring issue.

Railway arch and industrial conversions

Arches bring damp, low headroom and inventive plumbing. We check the isolation point, the drain route and the headroom before the visit, because all three decide how long the job takes.

Neighbourhood cafés and bakeries

From London Fields to Clapton the estate is small owner-operated sites, frequently on a single machine that has never been examined.

The machines we are called to in Hackney

The price of the examination follows the machine's boiler configuration, so it is worth checking which of these you have before you call. Every one has its own page covering the examination scope for that model and the rate it carries.

Do you examine machines in railway arches?

Yes, and they are a routine part of Hackney work. The three things we confirm at booking are the water isolation point, where the boiler can be drained, and whether there is headroom to open the machine. Damp arches also make corrosion on the boiler exterior more likely, which is something the examination looks for specifically.

My roastery machine runs ten hours a day. Does that change the interval?

It can. Where a machine works continuously the Written Scheme of Examination may specify a shorter interval than the usual 12 to 14 months, because scale and fatigue accumulate faster. We set the interval on the condition we find and record the reasoning with the certificate.

Can you examine several Hackney sites in one day?

Yes, and it is the cheapest way to do it. Grouping two or three nearby machines into one visit removes repeat travel and lets us hold published prices. Five or more sites under a group contract takes a fixed 20% off every invoice.
