PSSR inspections in Ilford, Barking & Dagenham
The Ilford, Barking and Dagenham corridor is one of the busiest high-street and light-industrial belts in East London and the wider UK. It is dense with cafés, bakeries and takeaway-led sites that run a coffee machine all day, plus a large industrial estate where depots and workshops keep a machine for staff. PSSR.uk examines those steam boilers from £265 + VAT, and a large part of the work is first-time examinations on machines that have never had a Written Scheme of Examination.
Quick answer
Do coffee machines in Ilford, Barking & Dagenham need a PSSR examination?
Yes, wherever the machine operates in a workplace. Steam is a relevant fluid under PSSR 2000, and steam systems are in scope at any pressure and any volume — so a commercial machine with a steam boiler needs a Written Scheme of Examination and periodic examination by a competent person, whatever its group count or how hard it is worked.

Scheduling in Ilford
- Early starts. The bakery-café trade here opens between 05:00 and 06:00 in places. We work the earliest window available so the machine is back under pressure before the first customer.
- A13 and industrial estate access. Depot and industrial sites have yards and straightforward vehicle access, and many can be examined without any impact on operations at all.
- High-street loading. Ilford Lane, High Road and Barking Road are controlled through the day with limited loading. A nominated bay or rear service access keeps the visit to a single attendance.

What the Ilford sites look like
The premises mix decides what the examination involves, what tends to fail, and how the visit has to be scheduled.
Bakery-cafés and takeaway-led sites
Long trading hours and a machine that runs continuously from early morning. Scale and safety-valve condition are the findings we record most often in this corridor.
Industrial estates and depots
Barking Riverside, Dagenham Dock and the A13 corridor hold workshops and depots with staff kitchens. The machine is a workplace pressure system and is usually undocumented.
Community and faith venues
Halls, community centres and places of worship with catering kitchens. These are workplaces for the purposes of PSSR, and they rarely hold any equipment records.

The price of the examination follows the machine's boiler configuration, so it is worth checking which of these you have before you call. Every one has its own page covering the examination scope for that model and the rate it carries.

I have never had the machine examined. Where do I start?
With a Written Scheme of Examination, which we prepare from the machine's make, model and boiler configuration. Under PSSR 2000 the scheme must be in place before the system is used and it sets out what will be examined and how often. After the first visit you receive the scheme, a signed report of examination and an asset record with the next due date.
Do you examine machines in community halls and places of worship?
Yes. A community kitchen is a workplace, and a coffee machine with a steam boiler in it is a pressure system in scope of PSSR 2000. These are among the sites least likely to hold any equipment records, so we document the machine from scratch.
What does an examination cost in the IG postcodes?
From £265 + VAT on a 1 or 2 group machine and £295 + VAT on a 3 group. A combined service and PSSR bundle is £405, £440 or £500 + VAT. Travel is included nationwide, so the price is the same in IG and RM as anywhere else in the UK.
